The General Assembly of the United Nations adopts a resolution to stop the war in Gaza and to support "UNRWA"
The United Nations General Assembly adopted, on Wednesday evening, a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the immediate release of all prisoners, along with a draft resolution supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The United Nations said in a statement via a post on the "X" platform: 158 countries voted in favor of the resolution and 13 countries abstained from voting; the US and only 8 other countries voted against this resolution.
The United Nations also announced in a separate statement that it had adopted a resolution affirming its full support for UNRWA, denouncing the legislation adopted by the Israeli Knesset on October 28, 2024, to suspend its work.Last year, the General Assembly adopted a similar resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce in the Strip, the unconditional release of prisoners, and humanitarian access.
The document, entitled “Demand for a Ceasefire in Gaza,” was approved by 159 countries, with 13 abstentions and nine voting against.
Last November, the Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution calling for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all prisoners. The United States vetoed the draft resolution and has blocked similar initiatives within the council.
There has been a consensus in the UN and UNSC ordering a ceasefire in Gaza and urgently providing aid to Gazans who have been starved for more than a year; the US government used its veto power to block UNSC resolutions, but it has no such power to block UNGA resolutions, which cannot be as easily enforced as UNSC resolutions.
Last month, judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) approved an indictment of some Israeli leaders of war crimes. There is also a pending case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) wherein Israel is accused of committing a genocide against the people of Palestine. UN experts and NGOs have also found evidence for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel's armed forces in Gaza and West Bank.
