UNSC Security Council calls for the opening of an investigation into mass graves in Gaza
On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a press statement proposed by Algeria, calling for immediate, independent, comprehensive, transparent and impartial investigations to determine the circumstances behind the mass graves that are still being discovered in the Gaza Strip. In the statement, which was adopted following the closed debate called by Algeria last Tuesday regarding mass graves in Gaza, the members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern over reports of the discovery of mass graves in and around the Nasser and Shifa hospitals in Gaza, where several hundred bodies were buried. Including women, children and the elderly.
All Council members also stressed the need to allow investigators unimpeded access to all mass grave sites in Gaza.
This consensus highlighted the extent of resentment prevailing in the international community due to the occupier’s persistence in his crimes and the lack of confidence in any investigations conducted by the occupation authorities.
In this regard, the members of the Security Council stressed the need for accountability for violations of international law and reiterated their demand that all parties strictly comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, in particular with regard to the protection of civilians.
In light of this tragedy that the families of the victims and missing persons are going through, members of the Security Council once again noted the importance of enabling families to know the fate and whereabouts of their missing relatives in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law.
The members of the Security Council also stressed the need for all parties to implement Security Council Resolutions 2728 (2024), 2720 (2023) and 2712 (2023) immediately and fully in order to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.
As per media reports, governments around the world, and independent NGOs, have been calling for investigation of the discovered mass graves for weeks.
